Eumenes II (died 160 or 159 BC)

King of Pergamum, son and successor of Attalus I. He came to the throne in 197 BC, maintained his father's alliance with Rome, and was rewarded with large additions of territory. To commemorate a victory over the Gauls 180 BC, he built the great sculptured altar of Zeus at Pergamum. He also founded the great library at Pergamum, the contents of which were later given by the Roman Mark Antony to Cleopatra, queen of Egypt, and transported to Alexandria.
