EumenidesIn Greek mythology, an appeasing name for the Furies, used by 458 BC in Eumenides by the Greek dramatist Aeschylus. Originally they were worshipped at the foot of the Areopagus in Athens, in Colonus, and outside Attica; their cult was similar to that of Gaia, mother of the Earth. The Eumenides may have derived from pre-Hellenic spirits concerned mainly with fertility, but came to have moral and social functions which later caused their identification with the Furies. |
