eyebright

Any of a group of annual plants belonging to the figwort family. They are 2–30 cm/1–12 in high and have whitish flowers streaked with purple. The name indicates their traditional use as an eye-medicine. (Genus Euphrasia, family Scrophulariaceae.)

E. americana of the southeastern US, with pale lavender flowers in clusters, is an example.
