wigeonEither of two species of dabbling duck of genus Anas, order Anseriformes. The American wigeon A. americana, about 48 cm/19 in long, is found along both coasts in winter and breeds inland. Males have a white-capped head and a green eye stripe.

| Visitors to the Sepulveda Basin could spot blue grosbeak, blue-winged teal, Eurasian wigeon, American avocet, solitary sandpiper, horned lark, Sprague's pipit, chestnut-collared longspur, and wintering Canada goose. An example of this group is the Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope), which breeds across the entire Palearctic region from Iceland to Siberia's Kamchatka Peninsula and winters primarily in the temperate and tropical zones of the Old World (32), where contact with West Nile virus is possible. The day included a couple of special treats for bird lovers - the red-breasted nuthatch and Eurasian wigeon, he said. |
