Eurovision Song Contest

International European pop contest. It was first staged in Switzerland in 1956 and was popular for several years, but became increasingly outdated in the late 1960s. Successful songs are often characterized by simple, catchy tunes and their appeal to young teenaged audiences. Few winners went on to major success, but a memorable exception was the Swedish group Abba, who won with ‘Waterloo’ in 1974.
