European Defence Community

Supranational western European army planned after World War II and designed to counterbalance the military superiority of the USSR in eastern Europe. Although a treaty was signed 1952, a thaw in East-West relations lessened the need for this force and negotiations were instead directed to the formation of the Western European Union in 1955.
