European Defence Community

Supranational western European army planned after World War II and designed to counterbalance the military superiority of the USSR in eastern Europe. Although a treaty was signed 1952, a thaw in East-West relations lessened the need for this force and negotiations were instead directed to the formation of the Western European Union in 1955.

For the United States, therefore, institutions such as NATO, the aborted European Defense Community, the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the Common Market were the instruments it employed to contain the West Europeans.
The European Defense Community (EDC) Treaty, signed in Paris (1952) and ratified by all five other ECSC member states, was vetoed by a majority of left-wing and right-wing radicals in the French Assemblee (August 30th).
After relations with the Soviet Union were further envenomed by the outbreak of the Korean War, the idea of a European Defense Community (EDC), both to provide a cover for the rearmament of Germany and act as the core of a European political community, appealed further.
