Europoort

Deep-sea port extension of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It is situated some 25 km/16 mi west of the city and covers more than 35 sq km/13.5 sq mi. Europoort contains facilities for handling bulk goods and crude oil imports, and was completed in 1968.

Europoort can receive tankers of up to 250,000 tonnes deadweight; the facility is particularly important as a centre of petroleum importing and refining for Western Europe. From here, pipelines transport oil and its by-products to Amsterdam and the Limburg region. The port has continued to expand through the reclamation of an additional area of land at the western end of the Nieuwe Waterweg (‘New Waterway’) known as the Maasvlakte.
