eustatic change

Global rise or fall in sea level caused by a change in the amount of water in the oceans (by contrast, isostatic adjustment involves a rising or sinking of the land, which causes a local change in sea level). During the last ice age, global sea level was lower than today because water became ‘locked-up’ in the form of ice and snow, and less water reached the oceans.
