Evans, Don(ald) L (1946– )

US public servant, secretary of commerce 2001–04. In this post he sought a level playing field in the global market for US businesses and also to support continued US leadership in cutting-edge technologies. His links with President George W Bush go back many years, and he helped with Bush's successful campaigns for the governorship of Texas in 1994 and 1998, and chaired Bush's 2000 presidential campaign.

Born in Houston, Texas, Evans studied engineering and business administration at the University of Texas at Austin. From the mid-1970s, he was in the oil industry, with the independent energy company Tom Brown Inc, eventually becoming its chief executive officer.
