Evans, Maurice

Evans, Maurice (1901–1989)

English-born US stage, film, and television actor. He appeared on stage in Britain and in the USA, mainly in classics. He also featured in films and on television, most regularly in Bewitched.

He was born in Dorchester, England. His first stage success was in Journey's End (1929). He went on to play the Old Vic and then made his Broadway debut in Romeo and Juliet (1936) with Katharine Cornell. He settled in the USA and during World War II he was in charge of the US Army's Entertainment Section in the Central Pacific and performed a famous modern-dress version of Hamlet for the troops.
