Evans, Ronald Ellwin, Jr (1933-1990)

US astronaut. He was the command module pilot of the Apollo 17 mission of December 1972, circling the Moon while astronauts Gene Cernan and Jack Schmitt landed to explore the lunar surface. Evans mapped the Moon from his orbit and later carried out a space walk to retrieve film from the cameras. Evans was selected as an astronaut in 1966 and left NASA in 1977.
