Evans, Harold Matthew (1928– )

English journalist. He was a journalist and editor on provincial newspapers, before becoming editor of The Sunday Times in 1967, where his reputation for investigative reporting and publishing controversial material flourished.

He was born in Manchester and attended Durham University. He started as a journalist on The Ashton-under-Lyne Reporter in 1944, and, after national service, returned to study at university. He joined The Manchester Evening News as an editorial assistant in 1952, and then went as a Commonwealth Fund fellow in journalism to the universities of Chicago and Stanford (1956–57). In 1958, he became assistant editor of The Manchester Evening News, and, in 1961, editor of The Northern Echo. Among his books are The Active Newsroom (1961) and the five-volume Editing and Design (1972).
