Evanston

City in Cook County, northeast Illinois, USA, on the shores of Lake Michigan, immediately north of Chicago; population (1994) 73,400. It is a lake port with manufactures that include steel products, hospital and dairy supplies, textbooks, foodstuffs, paint, chemicals, and radio and TV equipment. It is the home of Northwestern University.

Evanston serves as the headquarters of the American Academy of Pediatrics, National School Boards Association, National Merit Scholarship Corporation, Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and Rotary International; both of the latter were founded here. It is also a religious centre, with many organizations based in the city, including the United Methodist Church. Also in Evanston are the Evanston Art Center, Kendall College's Mitchell Indian Museum, and Northwestern's Block Gallery.
