Evansville

Industrial city and port in southwestern Indiana, USA, on the Ohio River near the Kentucky border; seat of Vanderburgh County; population (2000) 121,600. It is the commercial centre of an agricultural area; industries include electrical appliances, pharmaceuticals, and plastics.

Evansville was first settled in 1812, and incorporated in 1847. It developed as a river port in the 19th century, especially after the completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal (1853) which linked the Ohio River with Lake Erie. During the Civil War, Evansville was an important station on the Underground Railroad.

It is the seat of the University of Evansville (1854) and the University of Southern Indiana (1965). President Abraham Lincoln spent his boyhood in nearby Spencer County.
