Evenki Autonomous Okrug

District (okrug) comprising the central region of Krasnoyarsk krai (territory) in central Siberia, Russian Federation; area 767,600 sq km/296,370 sq mi; population (1996) 20,000 (67% Russian, 14% Evenki). The capital is Tura. The main industries are coal and graphite mining, and fur trapping.

Russian incursion into the area occupied by the Evenki people began with trading parties in the 17th century. Large-scale settlement by Russians began, together with some industrialization, in the Soviet era; the Evenki National Okrug was established in 1930, attaining autonomous status in 1977.

Physical

The region is mostly covered in dense coniferous forest and is crossed by the Tunguska River. There are large mineral resources in the Tungus coal basin.
