Everding, August (1928- )

German director and administrator. He studied in Bonn and Munich and was director of the Münchner Kammerspiele 1963-73. He directed the first performance of Searle's Hamlet at Hamburg in 1968, and was resident director at the Staatsoper 1973-77. He was intendant at the Munich Staatsoper from 1977, producing a Zauberflöte which was seen at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1979. In 1974 he directed productions of Tristan und Isolde and Boris Godunov at the Bayreuth Festival and the New York Metropolitan Opera House. He directed the Ring cycle at Chicago from 1992.
