Évora

Capital of Évora district, south-central Portugal, 113 km/70 mi east of Lisbon; population (2001) 44,800. It is a market centre for the Alentejo lowlands, and industries include metal goods, cotton, and hats. Évora was an important trading town under the Moors, and in the 15th and 16th centuries was a seat of the Portuguese court.

There is an aqueduct and a ruined temple of Diana (probably dating from the 2nd or 3rd centuries); the 12th-century archiepiscopal cathedral has a fine Gothic cloister.
