Ewell, Richard Stoddert

Ewell, Richard Stoddert (Stoddard) (1817–1872)

US Confederate general. He helped to suppress the Apache people 1857. Resigning his commission on the outbreak of the Civil War 1861, he served under ‘Stonewall’ Jackson. He commanded a division near Richmond 1862 and a corps of Robert E Lee's army at Gettysburg 1863.

Ewell graduated from the West Point military academy 1840. In the Mexican War 1847 he was present at Contrerasand Churubusco. During the Civil War he was badly wounded at the Battles of Bull Run.
