Ewing, Maria (1950– )

US soprano. A leading soprano of her generation, she is known for her range of voice and versatility of style, performing both classical and modern music.

She studied in Cleveland, Ohio and made her debut in 1973 at the Ravinia Festival with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 1976 she sang Cherubino at the New York Metropolitan Opera House and Mélisande at La Scala, Milan. She appeared at Glyndebourne in 1978 and 1984–85 as Dorabella, Poppea, and Carmen in productions by her then husband, Peter Hall. She sang Salome at Los Angeles in 1986, and again on her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1988. Other roles include Carmen at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1991, and Katerina in Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1994. She is also a successful concert artist.
