Excelsior Springs

Excelsior Springs

Town in Clay and Ray counties, northwest Missouri; population (1990) 10,400. It is located 40 km/25 mi northeast of Kansas City. Founded in 1880, it became known for its many natural mineral water springs and remains a well-known spa. Largely residential, it is also a marketing centre in a corn, oats, and wheat growing area that produces coal and manufactures plastics as well. The outlaw Jesse James was born near here in 1847.
