The mechanical excavator utilizes hydraulic rams. The ram consists of a piston in a cylinder connected by pipes to a fluid reservoir. The lever opens a valve that admits high-pressure fluid to one side of the piston, forcing it and the digger arm which is connected to it to move.

Machine designed for digging in the ground, or for earth-moving in general. Diggers with hydraulically powered digging arms are widely used on building sites. They may run on wheels or on caterpillar tracks. The largest excavators are the draglines used in mining to strip away earth covering the coal or mineral deposit.
