Excursions of Mr Brouček, The

Opera by Leoš Janáček (libretto by the composer with F Gellner, V Dyke, F S Procházka, and others, after two novels by S Čech), first produced in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), on 23 April 1920. It was first produced in Britain in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 5 September 1970, by the Prague National Theatre Company. Part I depicts sausage-eating Brouček amidst aesthetic, vegetarian moon-dwellers; part II concerns the 1420 Czech defence in battle of their Hussite faith. Brouček is almost punished for cowardice but returns to the present.
