Exmoor![]() Cloutsham Ball in Exmoor National Park. Exmoor's landscape bears traces of human activity dating back to the Mesolithic period (c. 8000–4000 BC). First established as a national park in 1954, Exmoor covers an area of 686 sq km/265 sq mi including the stretch of coastline between Combe Martin Bay in Devon and Minehead in Somerset. ![]() Porlock Bay, on the north Somerset coast, forms a section of the coastline of the Exmoor National Park. The 1.6 km/1 mi ridge of shingle faces the sea on one side and a salt marsh on the other, with a tidal lagoon that attracts rare migrating birds in spring and autumn. In the distance is Selworthy Beacon. Moorland district in north Devon and west Somerset, southwest England, forming (with the coast from Minehead to Combe Martin) a national park since 1954. The park covers an area of around 7,700 ha/19,000 acres, and includes Dunkery Beacon, its highest point at 519 m/1,705 ft; and the Doone Valley.
