Giant flying fish in New Zealand. A flying fish actually glides, rather than flies, through the air, spreading its enlarged fins as it breaks through the surface of the water. Some of the larger and stronger fliers can cover up to 180 m/600 ft in a single glide.

Any marine bony fishes of the family Exocoetidae, order Beloniformes, best represented in tropical waters. They have winglike pectoral fins that can be spread to glide over the water.
