point of sale

In business premises, place at which a sale is made. This could be at a retail store (such as a supermarket checkout), at home (door-to-door sales), or on the phone (phone selling). At the point of sale there will often be promotional materials and other inducements to purchase, such as notices of special offers. In conjunction with electronic funds transfer, point of sale is part of the terminology of ‘cashless shopping’, enabling buyers to transfer funds directly from their bank accounts to the shop's.
