Exumas

Chain of 365 islands and cays, most of them uninhabited, in the Bahamas, West Indies; area 290 sq km/112 sq mi; population (1997) 3,359. The group stretches for about 160 km/100 mi in a southeasterly direction and lies 64 km/40 mi southeast of New Providence Island. Most of the inhabitants live on Great Exuma, the largest of the islands, and Little Exuma in the south. The chief town is George Town, situated on Great Exuma; population (1997) 1,000. The main industry is tourism, but other occupations include the cultivation of onions, fishing, and farming. The islands were once the haunt of buccaneers.

The islands are separated from Andros Island to the west by Great Bahama Bank, and from Eleuthera Island and Cat Island to the east by Exumas Sound. To the northwest of Great Exuma is a US airfield, facing Exuma Sound.
