Eyston, George Edward Thomas

Eyston, George Edward Thomas (born 1897)

English racing driver and record breaker. His Thunderbolt car broke the world land speed record in 1937 and again in 1938, when the average speed was 572 kph/355 mph.

He was born in Oxford and, after service in World War I, he took up motor racing. Following his world records in the 1930s, he continued to break various speed records until he retired in 1954. He also achieved distinction in the fields of yachting and sculling and was awarded the OBE in 1948.
