Ezio

Libretto by Pietro Metastasio, first set to music by Nicola Porpora (Venice, 1728); other settings are by Handel (1732),Niccolò Jommelli (1741), Gluck (1750), and Johann Hasse (1755). The story tells how the general Aetius and the emperor Valentinian both love Fulvia. Maximus, her father, plays them off against each other to try and gain the throne. After much complication, Aetius and Fulvia are united and Maximus is pardoned.
