Förster, Aloys

Förster, (Emanuel) Aloys (1748–1823)

German oboist and composer. He wrote a treatise on thorough-bass. He was a prolific composer of piano and chamber pieces. Beethoven acknowledged his debt to Förster in the composition of string quartets.

After two years as a military bandsman, 1766–68, he lived as a freelance teacher and composer, first in Prague, Bohemia (Czech Republic), then from 1779 in Vienna, Austria.

Works

48 string quartets; four string quintets; six piano quartets, and other chamber music; piano concertos, sonatas, variations and other pieces.
