Fürst, Janos (1935– )

Hungarian conductor. He studied at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, and formed the Irish Chamber Orchestra in 1963. He made his London debut in 1972 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He was chief conductor of the Malmo Orchestra 1974–78, and musical director of the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra 1980–83. He conducted the Radio Telefís Éireann Orchestra, Dublin, 1983–89, with a Mahler series 1988–89. He had opera engagements with the English National Opera Ensemble and Scottish Opera, and led Elektra at Marseilles in 1989. He was musical director of the Winterthur Municipal Orchestra in 1990, and made his US debut with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra the same year. His recordings include the ballet Salome, by Maxwell Davies.
