Roosevelt

Small town in Monmouth County, central New Jersey; population (1990) 884. It is located 8 km/5 mi southeast of Hightstown. Originally called Jersey Homesteads, it was built in 1935 as a project of the Federal Resettlement Administration. Constructed for needle trade workers from Philadelphia and New York City, it was an experimental cooperative that combined residential, manufacturing, and agricultural elements. When the original plans proved unworkable, the community was opened to other residents in 1940; after President Roosevelt's death in 1945, it was renamed in his honour.

Community in Hempstead town, on west-central Long Island, Nassau County, southeast New York; population (1990) 15,030. It is situated to the north of Freeport, and is primarily residential.

I followed government as closely as any other 20-year-old (in the Army in Germany at the time) but I was stunned by the pictures of FDR addressing Congress from a wheelchair on his return from Yalta, and so was everyone I knew, and despite the mandate of de mortuis nil nisi bonum, I must say I never looked to Betty Beale as an authority on what her countrymen thought--particularly of FDR.
FDR maintained the Constitutional framework as he handled the bank crisis, the farm problem, and the stock market--and America began to recover.
