FTSE 100 Index

A share index of the 100 most highly capitalized companies listed on the London Stock Exchange. The index began in 1984 with a base level of 1,000. FTSE is an abbreviation of Financial Times Stock Exchange. The index is maintained by the FTSE Group, an independent company owned by the Financial Times newspaper and the London Stock Exchange

For example, if you bet that the FTSE index will go up, then, unlike traditional betting, you are not betting against the dealer, but someone else (another trader just like you who could be on the other side of the planet) who has an opposite view of the market (he or she obviously thinks the FTSE is going to go down, while you judge that it will go up).
