cordierite

Silicate mineral, (Mg,Fe)2Al4Si5O18, blue to purplish in colour. It is characteristic of metamorphic rocks formed from clay sediments under conditions of low pressure but moderate temperature; it is the mineral that forms the spots in spotted slate and spotted hornfels.
