Fair Isle

Small island, one of the Shetland Islands group, isolated midway between the Shetlands and the Orkney Islands, Scotland, 38 km/24 mi southwest of Sumburgh Head; population (2001) 69. Covering an area of 15 sq km/6 sq mi, it has a spectacular rocky coastline of high cliff crags. The principal activities are fishing and the production of multi-coloured knitted goods with characteristic intricate patterns.

A birdwatching station is based on Fair Isle for research into the origins, routes, wintering areas, and feeding habits of spring and autumn migratory birds. The island passed into the care of the National Trust for Scotland in 1954.
