Fairfax| Town in Osage County, northeast Oklahoma; population (1990) 1,700. It is located 35 km/22 mi southeast of Ponca City. A petroleum industry centre, with wells and refineries, it also has agriculture-related manufactures. There is a large American Indian population. The ballerina Maria Tallchief, who is of Osage descent, was born here in 1925. |
Fairfax| Town and administrative headquarters of Fairfax County (from which it is itself administratively separate), north Virginia; population (1990) 19,600. It is located 26 km/16 mi west-southwest of Washington, DC. Fairfax is a primarily residential community with some light manufacturing, including the production of optical lenses, instruments, and prefabricated buildings. It has a rich history and many old buildings, including its courthouse (1799). George Mason University (1957) lies outside the town's limits to the south. |
