Fairfax County

County in northeast Virginia; area 1,020 sq km/394 sq mi; population (1990) 818,600. It is situated to the west of Washington, DC, bounded by the Potomac River to the east and Bull Run and Occoquan Creek to the southwest. It is a heavily developed suburban and urban area that primarily houses Federal employees and those in some way connected to the government. It contains shopping and office complexes and professional centres, and wealthy suburbs. Also in Fairfax are older suburbs and historic sites like Mount Vernon.
