Fairfield

City and administrative headquarters of Solano County, north-central California, 65 km/40 mi southwest of Sacramento; population (1992) 82,200. It is a trading centre for the area's fruits, grains, and dairy products. Local industries include winemaking, brewing, and the manufacture of sporting goods, textiles, explosives, and boats.

It was first settled in 1835, and laid out as a town in the 1850s; it was incorporated as a city in 1903. It is the site of Travis Air Force Base.
