Fairfield County

County in southeast Connecticut; area 1,637 sq km/632 sq mi; population (1990) 827,600. It is situated on Long Island Sound, bordering the state of New York. It is the wealthiest county in Connecticut, and one of the wealthiest in the USA. A number of its communities are home to corporate executives, professionals, and entertainment figures, many of whom commute to New York City. Some of its villages, in rolling countryside, are dotted with large estates and horse farms. But Fairfield also has pockets of poverty, notably in the city of Bridgeport and in parts of Stamford. In recent decades, Fairfield has become a corporate centre in its own right, with offices or headquarters of major corporations locating in Greenwich, Stamford, and the Danbury area.

Its administrative headquarters and only major city is Lancaster. Dairying as well as the cultivation of fruit, grain, and livestock are important to the regional economy; other industries revolve around the exploitation of local resources such as timber, sand, and gravel. There is some manufacturing at Bremen and Lancaster.
