Fairhaven

Town in Bristol County, southeast Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 16,000. It is situated on Buzzards Bay, at the mouth of the Acushnet River, across from New Bedford. Fairhaven was originally agricultural area, but became a busy whaling port by the 1830s. It is now a suburb and resort, with industries in fishing, boatbuilding, and manufacturing nails and staples.

Most public buildings here are by Boston architect Charles Brigham and were donated to the town by resident oil millionaire Henry Huttleston Rogers. Fairhaven has six entries on the national register of historic places.
