Fajardo

Town on the east coast of Puerto Rico, in the West Indies; population (2000 est) 33,300. The town lies on the lowlands of the Fajardo River, 3 km/2 mi from its port of Playa de Fajardo, from which the produce of the region, including oranges, sugar, and tobacco products, is exported. It is linked by railway to San Juan. It is a boating centre with several marinas and a public beach at Seven Seas. Industries include fishing and the manufacture of cigars, soft drinks, furniture, and metal and electronic components. There are sugar plantations and orange groves in the fertile inland region surrounding the town. Fajardo is now a tourist centre.

Fajardo was founded in 1772. It was the scene of fighting during the Spanish–American War of 1898.
