Tributary of the Senegal River in West Africa, forming the boundary between Senegal and Mali; length 400 km/249 mi. Rising in the Fouta Djallon highlands of Guinea, it flows north to the confluence with the Senegal above Bakel. Cascades and rapids impede all navigation 190 km/118 mi from the mouth.
