Falconiformes

Order of birds of prey. It includes about 275 species of birds in about five families, grouped into three suborders: Cathartidae include the New World vultures, such as the condors; Acciptridae are the Old World vultures, eagles, and hawks; and Falconidae are the falcons. All members of this order hunt by day, eating the flesh of live animals or carrion. They have sharp, hooked bills and grasping claws.

The secretary bird is also placed in this order, but its classification is still controversial.

In laboratory studies, species in the orders Passeriformes (song birds), Charadriiformes (shorebirds), Strigiformes (owls), and Falconiformes (hawks) developed viremia levels sufficient to infect most feeding mosquitoes, whereas species of Columbiformes (pigeons), Piciformes (woodpeckers), and Anseriformes (ducks) did not (23,36).
