Falkberget, Johan

Falkberget, Johan (1879–1967)

Norwegian novelist. He described the life of the miners and mountain farmers in the Røros district in numerous colourful and intense stories. His most important works are the historical novel Den fjerde nattevakt/The Fourth Night Watch 1923 and the two novel cycles Christianus Sextus 1927–35 and Nattens brød/Night's Bread 1940–59.

Falkberget was born in Nordre Rugel, a valley near Røros, Trøndelag. He worked in the mines from about the age of 8 until he was 27 years old. Later he became a journalist and edited the socialist paper Nybrøt 1906–07 and Smaalenenes Socialdemokrat 1908; his journalistic writing continued throughout his career. He was a member of the Storting (Parliament) 1931–33.
