Falkland

Town and former royal burgh in Fife unitary authority, Scotland, 4 km/2.5 mi north of Glenrothes; population (2001) 1,200. Its chief industries are the manufacture of linen textiles and linoleum. The burgh was founded in 1458 by James II.

Falkland's ancient palace was the chief hunting lodge of the royal Stuarts from 1400 to 1603. The Renaissance-style south wing remains intact, completed by James V, who died at the lodge in 1542.
