Fallon

Town and administrative headquarters of Churchill County, west Nevada; population (2000) 7,500. It is situated on the Carson River, 89 km/55 mi east of Reno. A trade and processing centre for livestock, dairy, and agricultural (mainly alfalfa and cantaloupe) producers, it developed when the Newlands reclamation project (1903–8) and the Lahontan Dam (1914) brought irrigation and fertile farmland to an arid region.

The Fallon Indian Reservation is 8 km/5 mi northeast, the Fallon Naval Air Station, which trains fighter pilots, 5 km/3 mi to the southeast. Several small lakes and reservoirs surround the city, and the Carson Sink is nearby, to the northeast.
