Fallon

Town and administrative headquarters of Churchill County, west Nevada; population (2000) 7,500. It is situated on the Carson River, 89 km/55 mi east of Reno. A trade and processing centre for livestock, dairy, and agricultural (mainly alfalfa and cantaloupe) producers, it developed when the Newlands reclamation project (1903-8) and the Lahontan Dam (1914) brought irrigation and fertile farmland to an arid region.

The Fallon Indian Reservation is 8 km/5 mi northeast, the Fallon Naval Air Station, which trains fighter pilots, 5 km/3 mi to the southeast. Several small lakes and reservoirs surround the city, and the Carson Sink is nearby, to the northeast.
