Falun

Capital of Kopparberg county in southern Sweden, on Lake Runn; population (1995) 55,100. It grew up around a copper mine established in the 13th century. The main industries are now chemical production and timber processing. Falun is an international skiing centre.

Copper is thought to have been discovered at Falun by Vikings. The first written proof of discovery was in 1288. At one time Falun was producing about half the global output of copper.
