Faneuil, Peter

Faneuil, Peter (1700–1743)

American merchant. He inherited a large fortune from his uncle and offered to donate a public marketplace to Boston. The townspeople narrowly approved with 367 in favour and 360 opposed (1740). He died as the building was being completed.

He was born in New Rochelle, New York, of Huguenot descent.
