Fano

Port and seaside resort in Le Marche region, east-central Italy, on the Adriatic Sea, 10 km/6 mi southeast of Pesaro; population (1993 est) 54,100. There is a triumphal arch of the Roman emperor Augustus that marks the end of the Flaminian Way (Via Flaminia) from Rome, a fine cathedral with valuable frescoes, and a 15th-century castle of the ruling Malatesta family.
