Farakka Barrage

Barrage across the River Ganges in India, 18 km/11 mi from the border with Bangladesh, built by India in 1974 to control the flow of the Ganges and divert water into the Hooghly River to improve its navigability. It is a source of conflict between the two countries, as the Ganges water is needed by Bangladesh.
